Image of John Kaul

For the last half century, John Kaul has had a front-row seat to Minnesota history, from serving as the chief of staff to the senate majority leader to lobbying for the Minnesota state colleges and universities. He established a government relations firm which represented a wide range of clients big and small. John is well known in Minnesota state government circles because of his associations with governors, legislators, staff, agency heads, business leaders, and members of the press corps.

He retired from government relations work in 2019 to devote himself to filmmaking and photography. His large portfolio of candid photographs of the Minnesota legislature in action are regularly posted on Facebook and have been exhibited frequently in galleries and coffee houses. In 2015, he formed Afton Films to capture living history and tell important stories through the medium of film.
