Our nation’s policies, policing, and prosecution have a disparate impact upon Black people, people of color, people experiencing poverty, and Indigenous people resulting in higher rates and weights of criminal records.
Permanent and public criminal records perpetuate inequities, precluding millions of people from countless opportunities to move on and move up. Young people, directly and indirectly, are increasingly affected.
We Are All Criminals questions the wisdom, sustainability, and humanity in those policies and practices. This training is a catalyst for conversations about race, class, crime, privilege, punishment, and second chances.

Your Learning Objectives

Identify injustices that permeate our criminal and juvenile justice systems
Recognize the role that race and class play in our systems of justice and reentry
Consider how your perspective changes when you understand the unequal application of justice
Gain insight into the humanity of individuals currently and formerly incarcerated, and those with criminal records

Your Trainer

Emily Baxter is the founder and executive director of We Are All Criminals. Prior to this, Emily served as the director of public policy at the Council on Crime and Justice and as an assistant public defender at the Regional Native Public Defense Corporation representing members of the Leech Lake and White Earth Bands of Ojibwe charged with crimes in Minnesota State court. Emily is a former fellow at the University of Minnesota Law School; she began developing We Are All Criminals through an Archibald Bush Leadership Fellowship in 2012. She now lives in Durham, North Carolina, where she serves as the director of the NC Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty in recognition that our legal system will never be just so long as death is on the table.
