Youth Development
- No matter the type of youth work you do, whether you’re a formal mentor or not, adopting a mentoring mindset brings better outcomes. You’ll be better equipped to go beyond building resilience to beginning to address structural challenges faced by the young people you serve.
- Adopting the characteristics of effective mentors will help you create and support quality relationships with youth.
- You’ll also learn how Critical Mentoring is advancing the mentoring field forward to raise youth voice and address structural challenges that impact young people.
Your Learning Objectives
- Be able to identify different types of mentoring relationships and their purpose
- Understand the 5 elements of Developmental Relationships and explore how they can enhance mentoring relationships
- Learn how “Critical Mentoring” and “Youth Voice” are informing the field of mentoring
- Gain actionable strategies to become a more effective mentor in any type of youth work

Your Trainer
Hillary Lamberty is the Manager of Enrollment and Matching for the Community-Based Program at Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities. As a licensed social worker, she fosters a strengths-based empowerment approach and authentic relationships in all of her work with families, youth, and volunteers. Having worked in Minnesota public schools and internationally in higher education, she brings a global and inclusive perspective to the innovation and success of her team. Hillary holds a Master of Community Practice Social Work degree from the University of Minnesota, with a focus on community organization and advocacy; and a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Winona State University. She loves a good joke and lives with her husband and their three beautiful goldfish in Apple Valley, MN. Have a question?
