  • Hearing a young person having suicidal thoughts and plans can be alarming. But being prepared ahead of time will give you more confidence and courage to address suicidal ideation, warning signs, and risk factors.
  • As a youth worker, the trusting relationships you have with young people make you a valuable resource in suicide prevention and intervention.
  • This training will provide guidance and tools to equip you to address these situations. And give you resources you can suggest for young people.

Your Learning Objectives

  • Learn about risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors for suicidal ideation
  • Become familiar with helpful questions to assess suicidal ideation
  • Learn about three resources available for young people experiencing suicidal ideation
  • Recognize the systemic issues in your service community that may be impacting suicide prevention
  • Identify key elements of safety planning

Your Trainer

Reviewer Photo Lisa Borneman (she/they), DSW, MSW, LICSW is an Assistant Professor at St. Catherine University. Their varied career has centered around working with youth and young adults. Lisa has stayed connected to social work practice through their work as a clinician and intern supervisor with Bear Care Clinic in the White Bear Lake School District. They had a brief departure from social work where they earned their airframe and powerplant mechanic license and worked in the field of aircraft repair for several years before realizing they really did belong in social work. Lisa is happy and honored to be collaborating with YIPA on this training.
